Henri Le Sidaner was a French painter best known for his Intimiste—or intimate portrayals of domestic interiors using Impressionist techniques—depictions of quiet street corners and gardens. Sidaner utilized uneven, dappled brushstrokes to create atmospheric and glowing light in his paintings.

After spending the first years of his life in the West Indies, Henri Le Sidaner (French, 1862-1939) returned to France with his family in 1872. He began art studies in 1877 with history painter Alexandre Desmit (French, 1812-1885) in Dunkerque, and, in 1882, entered Alexandre Cabanel's atelier at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. From 1882 to 1893, Le Sidaner often retreated to Etaples.

Le Sidaner used subtle hatching of black wax crayon to build tonal passages of light and shadow, further augmenting the mood of the drawing. The artist dedicated the work to Charles-Henri Hirsch, a friend and author whom he welcomed to Gerberoy and who later set one of his novels there, dedicating the book, in turn, to Le Sidaner.
