Christ Church gate is the gate dedicated to Jesus Christ and being the entrance to the Cathedral located on Buttermarket area, where hundreds of tourists seem to like resting. The gate was built early 16th century having an inscription 'Hoc Opus constructum est anno Domini millesimo Quingentesimo decimo septimo' in honour of Prince Arthur.

I first met Heather Newton, who heads the masonry department at Canterbury, when I was organising.

The great abbey gate (c. 1300) remains standing. Also notable is the Canterbury Heritage Museum, which is housed in a 13th-century hospital. Some of the houses of the Huguenot refugees still stand along the Stour. Canterbury Cathedral, St. Augustine's Abbey, and St. Martin's Church were collectively designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Christ Church Gate. Built between 1504 and 1521 probably in honour of Prince Arthur, King Henry VIII's elder brother. You can see the Tudor coats-of-arms. On Arthur's death Henry married his brother's wife Katherine of Aragon. The gate was damaged in 1643 by the Puritans (a group of Protestants in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
